The Washington Commanders head into the 2024 NFL draft with nine selections, beginning with the No. 2 overall pick. Everyone is certain that the Commanders will target a quarterback with their first pick, allowing them to use their final eight selections to build around their new passer.

Washington signed over 20 outside free agents since free agency kicked off last month. Most of the deals were one year in length as the Commanders just looked to fill out the roster and compete in 2024. The core of the team will be built through the draft, and fortunately for general manager Adam Peters, he has a lot to work with in this draft.

In our previous seven-round mock draft, we traded up for an offensive tackle. In our mock draft 3.0, we did things a little differently, sitting still and picking the best available player for each of Washington’s nine selections. In doing so, the Commanders came away with multiple future starters in this mock draft.

Round 1, No. 2 overall: LSU QB Jayden Daniels

We’ve stuck with Drake Maye in previous mock drafts, and we still believe there is a good chance he’s the pick on April 25. However, the smoke around Daniels is becoming difficult to ignore. Adam Schefter says most NFL teams have him as the second-best quarterback; some even have him ranked first, and he believes that will be too much for Washington to pass on.

If Daniels is the pick, he gives offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury a dynamic dual threat who changes Washington’s offense from the moment he arrives. Daniels impacts the deep passing game and running game.

Round 2, No. 36 overall: Arizona OT Jordan Morgan

Washington is tempted to move up to secure its left tackle of the future. However, Peters remains at No. 36, and Morgan falls to him. The Commanders like Morgan, hosting him on a top-30 visit. There are some who believe he could be better at guard, but Washington likes him at tackle. Even better, there will be no waiting for him to develop. Morgan is ready to play from the moment he is drafted.

Round 2, No. 40 overall: South Carolina WR Xavier Legette

The Commanders will address the wide receiver position in the draft. At No. 40, Peters finds it too difficult to pass on Xavier Legette. There are some concerns, considering he emerged during his final season. But Legette was terrific in 2023. He has good size and speed, can help on kickoff returns, and looks like a running back after the catch. He instantly becomes Washington’s No. 3 receiver behind Terry McLaurin and Jahah Dotson.

Round 3, No. 67 overall: Kansas State TE Ben Sinnott

Sinnott has helped himself throughout the pre-draft process. He was productive at Kansas State and really shined at the NFL combine. Sinnott is a versatile weapon who can help as a rookie but will not be forced to start with Zach Ertz on the roster. Sinnott can line up at multiple positions.

Round 3, No. 78 overall: Michigan CB Mike Sainristil

Michigan defensive back Mike Sainristil celebrates a play against Washington during the second half of the national championship game at NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.

The Commanders need cornerback help. Peters is shocked to see the Michigan star on the board at No. 78. Sainristil is likely a second-round pick, but Washington finds their 2024 starting slot cornerback here. Adding Sainristil allows Quan Martin to play free safety.

Round 3, No. 100 overall: Yale OT Kiran Amegadjie

To end the third round, the Commanders doubled down at offensive tackle, selecting Amegadjie. Washington also hosted him on a top-30 visit, and while some development is needed here, Amegadjie has the attention of NFL scouts. He has elite physical traits and could prove to be a steal. Adding two offensive tackles on Day 2 is a smart move.

Round 5, No. 139 overall: Utah edge Jonah Elliss

Washington would have liked to have addressed edge rusher earlier, but the board dictated other selections. Here, the Commanders are fortunate to find Elliss still available. Elliss is available here because he doesn’t possess the size and athleticism teams covet. But his pedigree (his dad was a longtime NFL starting DL) and motor make him an attractive option for head coach Dan Quinn. Quinn will find ways to maximize Elliss’ strengths.

Round 5, No. 152 overall: Michigan G Zak Zinter

Zinter is a two-time All-Big Ten performer and a first-team All-American. He is exactly what you envision in a Michigan offensive lineman. An injury probably knocks Zinter down the board, but Washington, which is rebuilding its offensive line, is thrilled to land him here. Zinter isn’t a great athlete, but he is a mauler inside and plays with terrific technique. Zinter will succeed in the NFL.

Round 7, No. 222 overall: Auburn CB Nehemiah Pritchett

Commanders 2024 NFL 7-round mock draft: 3.0 (10)

Auburn Tigers defensive back Nehemiah Pritchett (18) is called for defensive pass interference on Arkansas Razorbacks wide receiver Matt Landers (3) as the Auburn Tigers take on Arkansas Razorbacks at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022. Arkansas Razorbacks leads Auburn Tigers 17-13 at halftime.

With its last pick, the Commanders look for someone with elite physical traits. That’s Pritchett. He is 6-foot-0 with 4.36 speed and played in the SEC. He is tough and competitive. You take chances on players like Pritchett this late in the draft. Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. have found success with Day 3 cornerbacks the last few years. Pritchell could be a fun project for them.
