The US mental health tech start-up INVI MindHealth has raised US$1.5mto advance digital mental health solutions.

INVI MindHealth aims to “revolutionise” mental healthcare by using predictive analytics to detect decreases in mental wellbeing.

The platform combines biometrics, deep learning analytics, AI and human networks to offer “personalised” mental health solutions.

The proceeds from this funding round will be used to improve INVI Mindhealth’s current app and help create a dashboard tool for leaders so they can monitor and support the wellbeing of their teams.

“INVI MindHealth was started after multiple SEAL Team teammates of mine took their lives,” saidJonathan Wilson, founder and chief executive officer.

“The veteran suicide rate was moving in the wrong direction and the current medical model felt ill-equipped and overwhelmed in addressing this epidemic.

“Realising that mental health challenges were not agnostic to just veterans but impact almost everyone, we felt an obligation to do something about it. This investment will accelerate the development of our innovative mental health platform.

INVI Mindhealth is currently conducting research to deepen the understanding of mental health treatments.

In collaboration with a leading university in Texas, the company is conducting a longitudinal observational pilot study involving 40 veterans with PTSD undergoing psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.

The study will include clinical and neurobiological assessments, with INVI collecting biometric data through wearable devices and capturing participants’ baselines and changes induced by the psychedelic intervention focusing on heart rate variability, heart rate and sleep.

Cleveland Clinic has expanded its TeamBirth model, a unique labour and delivery programme, citing higher patient satisfaction and a reduction in C-section rates.

TeamBirth is a shared decision-making model that focuses on improving communication between caregivers and pregnant patients to bolster safety and quality of care.

In the TeamBirth model, the patient’s care team has “huddles” with patients on the birthing units at regular intervals before, during and after delivery to review the patient’s condition and preferences, and to set clear expectations for what is to come.

The initiative has been expanded to labour and delivery units at main campus, Fairview and Hillcrest hospitals. This follows the success of the programme at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, an early US adopter of TeamBirth.

“We are delighted to expand this evidence-based programme to these additional hospitals within our health system,” said Edward Chien, chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at Cleveland Clinic.

“While it helps all women, it has been found to have a particular benefit for minority patients, many of whom have had their concerns minimised by the healthcare system in the past. This programme ensures their voices and preferences are heard and respected.”

Dr Catherine Wilkins, who is one of the physician-leaders of this initiative, said: “Our team is very excited to implement this new practice model and provide even-better care for our patients who are delivering at our hospitals.

“We care deeply about every birthing person having a safe, uncomplicated delivery that is as dignified and pleasant as possible, and this is particularly important for patients who have had bad experiences in healthcare in the past that have made them understandably distrustful. An emphasis on shared decision-making is key to making that happen.”

Dr Jennifer Savitski, director of obstetrics and gynaecology at Akron General who led the TeamBirth initiative there, added: “We have seen a marked improvement in outcomes and patient satisfaction scores since implementing TeamBirth and we are excited to see it expanding to other Cleveland Clinic hospitals.

“TeamBirth ensures every person has a voice in their birth experience.”

More than half of US women feel like they have to fight to get the medical care they need, new research has found.

The State of Maternal Health Report, published by the consulting and market research firm The Harris Poll, highlighted alarming challenges around maternal healthcare in the US.

The survey, conducted in April among more than 1,000 US women, identified that a worrying proportion of women believe they must fight to receive the medical care they need, with more than half of women (53 per cent) agreeing with this sentiment.

The research found that roughly two in five women who were pregnant or had been pregnant said they experienced challenges to accessing care during pregnancy and childbirth. Access to care issues appeared even more pronounced among younger women aged 18-34, women residing in the South, employed women and mothers with children under 18.

Only 42 per cent of women who were pregnant or had ever been pregnant strongly felt they had access to the best possible care, the findings also showed, a significant drop from 50 per cent in 2022.

“The data clearly show that not only are many women feeling disregarded and underserved by our healthcare system during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives, but there is also an overwhelming demand for immediate improvements to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all mothers in America,” saidChristina Lojek, research manager at The Harris Poll.

“Furthermore, the results confirm that access to care and care quality issues are becoming more prevalent, and depending on which state you live in, you could be more at risk.”

Two-thirds of US women (67 per cent) expressed concerns that the current political climate is exacerbating the risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth.

However, women are demanding change – a vast majority (83 per cent) state that more needs to be done to ensure safer pregnancy and birthing conditions in the US, with 45 per cent strongly endorsing this view.
