Denny’s is known as one of America’s Diners. Everyone goes there, and it’s a diner we all love, and not least for Denny’s imaginative naming of their food!

I think that Moons Over My Hammy takes the gold, but how about The Super Bird, Lumberjack Slam, and Choconana Pancake Breakfast?

Three Things You May Not Know About Denny’s Slams

  • The Grand Slam pays tribute to Hank Aaron. The combo was introduced at an Atlanta Denny’s in 1977 to celebrate the city’s hero, Hank Aaron, who had crushed Babe Ruth’s 714-hit home-run record.
  • Denny’s served two million free Grand Slams in one day following Super Bowl XLIII. Denny’s aired an ad during the game, promising an irresistible free Grand Slam to absolutely every customer who came into a Denny’s between 6 am and 2 pm.
  • At the now-closed Manhattan Denny’s, you could order a $300 Grand Cru Slam, a special breakfast for two that included a bottle of Dom Pérignon.

Cheese and Ham Choices

I like to make this sandwich with American cheese that comes from the deli. American cheese has its place, and the deli variety is much better than the cellophane-wrapped kind we often associate with this cheese.

You may want to experiment with honeybaked ham, maple glazed ham, or Virginia baked ham to give this classic breakfast sandwich some extra love.

So, go to the deli and buy exactly what you need. You are going to love this delicious scrambled egg sandwich.

How to Make Moons Over My Hammy

  1. In a small bowl, combine the two eggs and milk. Whisk until uniform.
  2. Heat a small non-stick skillet over low-medium heat.
  3. Add butter to the skillet.
  4. Once the butter has melted, add the eggs. Season eggs with salt and pepper.
  5. Stir the eggs continually until they have set firm. Remove eggs from the skillet.
  6. Wipe out the skillet and place the ham slices in the skillet.
  7. Cook the ham for a couple of minutes. Flip the ham with a spatula and cook the other side for an additional 2 minutes. Remove ham from the skillet.
  8. Spread butter on one slice of bread and place the bread buttered side down into the skillet.
  9. Top bread with two slices of American cheese, eggs, ham, Swiss cheese, and the remaining slice of sourdough bread.
  10. Spread butter on the top piece of bread. Cook on low to medium-low heat on each side or until the bread is toasted brown.
  11. Cut sandwich in half when serving.

If somebody is eating a non high fibre bread, with full eggs, a ton of ham, fried in butter and theyre worried about the falories from the cheese being what sets it over the edge i think they seriously need to re evaluate their life choices.
One of these sandwiches is over half the recommemded daily alotment of calories for the average adult person. I can garuntee that anyone who eats this bery small volume high calorie food is going to be hingry sgain within the hour, stuff their gob more, before they know it theyre over 5000 caliries for the day and wondering why theyre so fat.

Very close to the real thing. What is it missing? Eating on a table that sticky from pancake syrup residue.

I am looking for the reciepe for the cheese sauce that Dennys use to use in the English Scramble that they use to make, the sauce was like the cheese soup they use to serve… maybe just a little thicker…. If you can help me I would greatly appreciate it… Thank you, Teresa

This recipe looks great, but WOW!… 8 slices of Ham and 4 slices of Cheese for one sandwich? I really hope others are paying attention to the Nutrition Facts. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a major foodie, and I do love this sandwich as well as many other recipes I prolly should not be eating (Diabetic) but I do reward myself from time to time (just gotta plan ahead).

    One Serving:
    1,364 Calories
    42 Grams Sat Fat
    596 Mg Cholesterol
    3,725 Mg Sodium
    78 Grams Carbs

If that doesn’t give you a heart attack, I don’t know what will!! PLEASE be aware of these high numbers and adjust accordingly. I feel 4 slices of Ham and 2 slices of Cheese is more appropriate and you probably won’t even miss the extra slices left off. You likely won’t miss the after meal heaviness in your belly either.

Enjoy your sammy, just don’t kill yourself in the process!
    Thank you.

I appreciate your cautionary tale added to the recipe, perhaps some recipes should come with warning labels. I don’t judge food or recipes, I try to duplicate them. I provide nutritional information for the reader and hope they can decide if the recipe and the preparation method is acceptible for them.

I think they also fry the bread in grease or butter? You can also put the sandwhich(after egg is cooked of course) in the oven to warm up and brown the bread. I use one slice of swiss and american cheese. I do that as a healthier option. Or if you have a little mini oven.

I love cheese, it is my weakness. I have to cut back on the calories, so would have to make a chose between the 2 cheeses. What a shame.
