Rachel Zegler seemed to be living out every actors’ dream when an open casting call saw her becoming a Hollywood sweetheart in 2021, being plucked from obscurity amid 30,000 other applicants while still in high school.

However, her meteoric rise to fame has seemingly only been matched by her fall from grace as she continues to be surrounded by controversies since her casting in the live-action remake of Snow White.

While the actress has not addressed many of these controversies and concerns from fans, she seemingly wore a tell-tale sweatshirt, which read: "No tears left to cry" written upside, over the weekend as she appeared in New York.

Her breakout role as leading lady Maria in West Side Story catapulted the New Jersey native to fame but she turned a few heads when she revealed she’d had nine rounds of auditions for the role and declared: “No job is worth that but this one was!”

Shortly after the movie musical was released, Rachel admitted to Town & Countryshe struggled with “anxiety and imposter syndrome” due to her sensational rise to fame.

The actress kept up the momentum by joining the DCEU in Shazam: Fury of the Gods but whileThe Hollywood Reporterahead of the movie’s release, Rachel revealed she had taken the role of Anthea because she “needed a job” during the pandemic.

However, when Shazam!’s sequel started getting bombed by critics, the actress made a staunch defense online saying: “Some people out there and just being… senselessly mean.”

The burgeoning Hollywood star was then slated to star as the titular Disney princess in a live-action remake of Snow White.

This move would see the 22-year-old join Hollywood legends Harry Potter Emma Watson, Elle Fanning and Lily James in the leagues of Disney princesses, but this is when public favor truly started turning against the actress.

The actress’ involvement in the film has been laden with controversies from the start as she was widely criticized for taking on the role in the first place as a Latina, not dissimilar to the backlash Halle Bailey faced when she was cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

Both Rachel and Disney defended the casting decision with Snow White director Marc Webb praising the actress to AFP saying: “Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts.”

However, the actress further concerned fans when her disdain for the Disney classic became clear across a number of interviews as she dubbed the Prince a “stalker” and declared the “weird” storyline wouldn’t be incorporated into her version of the movie.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly alongside her costar Gal Gadot, Rachel also noted the 1937 animation was “extremely dated when it comes to women being in roles of power” and revealed she had only ever since the movie once.

The comments sparked a media storm, lead by fury from Disney fans and film purists who recognize Snow White, particularly for its groundbreaking nature as the first full-length animated feature in history.

Additionally, Rachel has come under fire from activist groups too claiming she is a “fake” feminist while others claim she is perpetuating “woke”.
