Gone To Her Reward

There was a feeling of sorrow throughout the entire community when the news of the death of Mrs. Thomas Baker was recieved last Saturday.

Mrs. Lucy D. Baker was born in Sullivan County, N. Y., May 15, 1840, the oldest daughter of Wm. and Nancy Wood. She was married to Marcus Crawford and came to Wisconsin in 1855. Some time after his death she was married to Thomas Baker, Sept. 15, 1877, since which time she has been a resident of Pine Grove. She has been for many years a loved and honored member of the Free Will Baptist Church, of which Rev. R. D. Sparks, her uncle, is the pastor. To all of the members, as well as to the entire community, the loss is unspeakably great, for a good woman has gone to her reward. She passed peacefully away at her home Saturday morning, Nov. 28, 1903, after a short illness with lung fever, though she had been in poor health for some time.

She is survived by a grief-stricken husband, an aged mother, four brothers, Andrew, Hiram, James and Thomas Wood, and three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Crawford, Mrs. Asenath Ellis and Mrs. Mary Perry, and a host of other relatives and friends, her father and one sister, Mrs. Jane Ferdon, having passed away a number of years ago.

Though she had no children of her own, she was as a mother to a niece, Lucy Crawford, from infancy to womanhood, and her son, Elmer Strong, to both of whom Mr. and Mrs. Baker have been as parents in every possible way.

Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, Rev. E. G. Roberts, of Almond, preaching the sermon, after which interment took place in the Plainfield Cemetery. A very large number of sympathizing friends were present to pay all respect to the memory of a loved one.

Among those present from a distance were, Wm. Cannon, of Merrill; Mrs Betsy Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Wood and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Wood, from Mill Creek.

Plainfield News

News was received here Wednesday night announcing the death of Thomas Baker, who had been visiting in California. The dispatch was brief but stated that he died at one o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Baker had gone west several weeks ago in company of his stepson, W. H. Canon, of Merrill, and had written home last Saturday that he intended coming back to Wisconsin in about two weeks. Mr. Baker was an early resident of Portage County, having resided in Pine Grove over fifty years on the same farm all these years. He was 76 years old and leaves one daughter, Mrs. Miles Leavitt, of Oasis. The remains will be brought here for burial and will probably arrive the first of next week.

The remains of Thomas Baker arrived here Wednesday from Seattle, Washington, brief mention of which was made in the Journal last week. The funeral took place the same day and the remains were laid in the Bluff cemetery in Pine Grove. Mr. Baker was born in England where he spent his early days. He was married in England to Hannah Smith and they came to Wisconsin in the early fifties. Two children were born to them, a boy and a girl, the boy dying in infancy and the girl who is now his only surviving heir is Mrs. M. N. Leavitt of Oasis, Wis. Mr. Baker settled on a farm in Pine Grove where for the past 55 years he has been a prosperous and well known farmer. Later he married Mrs. W. H. Canon recently of Merrill. In 1875, Mr. Baker's wife died. He was married to Mrs. Lucy Crawford, on Sept. 28, 1877, who died only a little over two years ago. During Mr. Baker's long life in Pine Grove he held the office of school treasurer many years and was a supervisor of his town one year. He was an honest and industrious person and was highly respected in his town and county. His long trip to the western states this winter was a surprise to his friends as he was a lover of his home and very seldom made long trips on a visit. It is indeed strange that death should overtake him so far from his old home but as providence willed it he passed his last days of his life in Seattle, Washington.
