[ laughter ] they got snoopy. they got bluey they got oppenheimer they got a lot of -- [ laughter ] well, guys, everyone is talking about this today in san francisco, president biden met face to face with chinese president xi jinping for the first time in a year yep. biden said "thank you for being here." and president xi was like, "thanks to tiktok, i'm always here." [ laughter ] well, guys, the house passed a a spending bill to avoid a a government shutdown.

and today, it was working its way through the senate and certain senators actually spoke up about the bill. check out what they had to say earlier today. first up, senator mitch mcconnell said, "the bill isn't perfect, but i'm sure we'll pass it. the process will be completely smooth." then senator cory booker said, "did somebody say completely smooth [ light laughter ] sorry, i thought you were talking about me anyway, when it comes to this challenge, this is just the tip of the iceberg." then, senator chuck schumer said, "did someone say just the tip? [ laughter ] sorry, thought you were talking about me." [ laughter ] "i didn't mean to go off on a tangent. and senator joe manchin said, "did someone say tan gent? anyway, if y'all don't pass this, it'll come back to haunt you. then senator tom carpenter said, "did someone haunt you [ laughter ] anyway, we must act. the american people might be watching and they might be caring." and senator cynthia lummis said, "did somebody say it might be a karen [ laughter ] anyway, can we hurry this along? i want to watch the next

[ light laughter ] and made me go to scotland just to stay at shrek's house >> jimmy: yeah so you -- so she showed you this on -- >> yeah, and i said, "ha-ha, that's funny." and she said, "i'll tell you what's funnier -- we're going. [ laughter ] and then dragged me there -- didn't drag me, i was into it -- took me to scotland and then we got there. and you gotta drive like 40 minutes off the main road,

over dirt roads and it's like in the middle of nowhere it felt like a trick it felt like, did i do something wrong? is this the last time i'm going to see anyone? >> jimmy: life >> is this it? >> jimmy: the sunshine, yeah, "this is over," yeah, of course >> and then we got out there and it's beautiful like, there's so much effort and right down to the finest detail inside was -- it looked exactly like in the movie. then she says, "put that on," and made me dress up as shrek. [ laughter ] and she pulled out -- and everyone thinks -- there's some, like, videos and photos and everyone thinks we took a camera crew with us. it was just us two and she put green paint all over herself >> jimmy: do -- now, do you -- am i missing something do you like "shrek"? >> not that much [ laughter ] >> jimmy: okay does she like "shrek" that much just - >> clearly >> jimmy: yeah [ light laughter ] >> i didn't know about that. i didn't know about this infatuation. >> jimmy: well, here's -- here's rita as fiona but i want to show you - [ laughter ] let me zoom in here's you as shrek.

>> there's me. look at that [ laughter ] >> jimmy: it's unbelievable. >> look at that mask >> jimmy: unbelievable can we talk about your film "next goal wins" >> yes, please >> jimmy: this is -- it's in theaters this friday, "next goal wins. it's based on a true story how'd you hear about this story? >> a few years ago, there was a documentary made, and it's a a true story of the worst soccer team in the world so it's american samoa -- they're no longer the worst. that's not really a spoiler, but back then -- in the history of the country, they'd never won a game or scored a goal. and they still hold the record for the biggest international loss and that's against australia, and they lost 31-0 >> jimmy: oh, stop can't they call it after a a certain amount of goals? >> you -- i don't know they're throwing all the towels onto the field no, they -- and after that, you'd think that would deter most people from playing again but they had the tenacity, the determination to get better, and they got a coach in, who's played by michael fassbender, and he turns the team around

>> tariq: yeah, yeah, yeah, shawn and i. well, you know shawn, who's now the roots manager, you know, my long-time you know, competitor yeah, we started - >> jimmy: was he >> tariq: yeah, he's about two years older than me. and when we were young, we would always compete just with the -- first with, you know, sketching and like, visual art and then it sort of, you know, elevated into writing songs out of the -- our encyclopedias and stuff. we used encyclopedias, dictionaries and stuff and write rhymes so, you know, he got nice. i think i started around 9, and by the time i was 11 and he was 13 or so, he made a record he had like a piece of vinyl that was pressed up. >> jimmy: what >> tariq: so then that became my life's mission was, you know, just getting better than he was on that record. >> jimmy: before you were the roots, you were the square roots, right? >> tariq: yeah, yeah [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: did you have any other names for the band besides square roots >> tariq: yeah, yeah, you know, we were radioactivity at one point. i think, you know, we also - >> jimmy: not bad. >> tariq: -- entertained the idea of calling ourselves like soul fish or something, i don't know, but it didn't stick.

one's self and like, whatever that journey, you know sort of, you know includes. for me, you know, it's been a personal trajectory, and it's been about addressing and unpacking a lot of the trauma of the past, you know, with stuff that, you know even my closest friends didn't know about me, because i don't wear it on my sleeve. but yeah, i think at this stage of the game, at this point in my career and, you know, at this point of -- in the roots' career, we -- i think we -- the idea is to be of service, right? you know, so i feel like addressing this sort of thing and, you know, just speaking to my history in this way is what's better -- what's going to best serve my long-time fans and supporters, you know >> jimmy: yeah >> tariq: yeah, i will meet people who, you know said some of the same things, and that "yo, i've rocked with you for such a long time long-time fan, i felt like i knew you, i knew your music, but you know, i didn't." >> jimmy: and i like the idea of upcycling >> tariq: yeah, yeah >> jimmy: it's not recycling, but it's - >> tariq: upcycling. yeah, you don't have to abandon everything you know, there's a quote from

chef tim, what i made for you tonight using red robin ingredients, is a korean style chicken nugget chicken sandwich with gochujang, some sesame oil in there, you got some rice vinegar, you want a little honey in there, you're getting a little pickle taste on that red robin bun. look at this, wow, you should see -- wow, yeah well, you can't complain about that, right? but come on, you have respect. that's what i'm talking about. >> sweet, sour, spicy. >> jimmy: sweet, sour, spicy >> i like the pickles, you took the breading off >> jimmy: yeah, i took the -- yeah i took -- yeah, thanks, appreciate that.
